Top Ten reasons to tell your story
Do you have a story to tell about God's mercy, redemption or how God noticed you? God wants you to tell your story! Here are some reasons that may encourage you.
10.) To remind us we’re not alone
People in crisis feel alone. When you think God isn’t paying attention, hearing someone else’s story can remind you someone out there may have similar experiences.
9.) To help us heal
Part of the healing process is to share your story. Sometimes our stories are too fresh and new to share because we are still healing. However, when you’re ready, having the chance to tell your story out loud allows you to tackle any unresolved issues or damaged relationships that may have come out of the story.
8.) To build community
As you tell your story, you may feel vulnerable, but we may see your mistakes and breakthroughs as courage. You had courage to trust us by sharing with us. This can allow for connections that include transparency, authenticity and freedom to grow.
7.) To give others hope
It amazes me that every time a story is told, someone says it gives them hope. Hope to have courage. Hope to realize God is paying attention. Hope to know someone understands. When we hear how you survived, how you endured, and how God changed you, you've given us hope.
6.) To bring things into the light
Sometimes our experiences are difficult to talk about because they involve shame. It can be difficult to see clearly because suffering can limit our perspective. As sin is brought into the light, it no longer has a hold over us. We are reminded God was there all along.
5.) To fulfill God’s commands
Luke 8: 30 states: Return home and tell how much God has done for you. Indeed, we are to share the testimony and good news of the gospel. This may be the salvation story itself or how God continues to save us as part of the sanctification process. Matthew 10:27 states "What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim upon the housetops.
4.) To encourage others to tell their story
We all have a story to tell. Hearing another person’s story could trigger someone to get the help they need. It could trigger someone to make a step of faith. It could encourage someone else to tell their story.
3.) To remind you of all God has done, even behind the scenes
Ephesians 3:9-10 (The Message) And so here I am, preaching and writing about things that are way over my head, the inexhaustible riches and generosity of Christ. My task is to bring out in the open and make plain what God, who created all this in the first place, has been doing in secret and behind the scenes all along. Through followers of Jesus like yourselves gathered in churches, this extraordinary plan of God is becoming known and talked about even among the angels
2.) To dwell on the attributes of God
When we tell our stories, we learn more about God’s attributes of mercy, omniscience, power, justice and love. It turns our focus off self and on to what is possible with God.
1.) To worship and bring God glory
God created us to bring Him glory. As you tell your story, we’ll witness the way God redeemed and restored your life. How He took your pieces and made you whole. How you learned to worship Him even when you didn’t think He was there. Redemption wins!
